Behind the Facade: University Museums

Two Oxford artists have joined forces with four local community groups to show us that the value of a museum can be extended beyond the objects on display, to the hands of the staff that work with the exhibits, place them in display cases, record their history and at times help restore them.  more...

Behind the scenes

THE SECRET LIFE OF THE NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM Richard Fortey (HarperPress, £20)Working for one's entire career in the extravagant and glorious building that is London's Natural History Museum must be life-shaping and character-moulding. It certainly has been for Robert Fortey, who was a senior palaeontologist at the Museum until he retired in 2006 to live in Oxford.  more...

Haunting houses

A mysterious, isolated, rambling house looms up in front of our hero, or heroine. It's a classic start to a traditional story - and one of author Linda Newbery's favourite settings. Her award-winning young adult novel Set in Stone started in a spooky house inspired by the old manor at Wheatley Park School, where the author was an English teacher for many years, and her latest book, Nevermore, begins in a similar way.  more...

Cinema

4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days; Back to Normandy; Shot in Bombay

The collapse of Communism sparked a crisis in Eastern European cinema. Deprived of state subsidies, flourishing industries went into rapid decline and only since the millennium have film-makers in the myriad of fledgling republics begun to find a distinctive voice and attract wider critical attention. Predictably, Russia, Poland, Croatia and the Czech Republic have led the way. But Romania is also experiencing a new wave, which is all the more remarkable for the fact that, apart from Lucien Pintilie, the country has produced no world-class directors since moving pictures first arrived in May 1896.  more...

No Country for Old Men; Alien Vs Predator — Requiem

Writer-directors Joel and Ethan Coen orchestrate an unbearably tense game of cat-and-mouse against the barren Texan borderlands in the frequently bloody thriller No Country for Old Men, based on the book by Cormac McCarthy. Surpassing the near-perfect 1996 caper Fargo, the film is a breathtaking demonstration of concise storytelling and filmmaking brio, coupled with powerful performances and the blackest humour.  more...

Dance

The Solos Project: Burton Taylor Theatre, Oxford

The Solos Project is the brainchild of Oxford choreographer and former Royal Ballet soloist Susie Crow. The idea was to show six solo works by dancers and choreographers with close Oxford connections, giving the performers - in most case also the creators - a chance, over the course of five performances, to improve, correct and adapt their piece in a way that isn't possible after a single showing.  more...

Eating Out

The Vine, Cumnor

MY friend Liz always looks forward to our shared excursions to south Oxfordshire pubs. Her response to the many meals put before her over the years is usually positive - effusive even. So when she struggled to eat the meal she'd ordered at The Vine Inn, Cumnor, I knew something was wrong.  more...

Back to the future

Shoppers' tastes have changed enormously in the past century, but one retailer has kept to its founding ideals in a fast-moving industry. The principles on which The Co-operative (now in its new branding no longer just The Co-op) date back to the start of the Co-operative Movement in the mid-19th century.  more...

Co-operative futures

The Co-operative is not just about the familiar shops on high streets across the county and the UK. The Midcounties Co-operative is just one example, albeit a very big one, of a business that is run using the co-operative model.  more...

Merlot — the Alan Titchmarsh of grapes

On my recent travels I stumbled into a wine shop that not only sold wine but books, gadgets and many other things besides. I was obviously in something of a spendthrift mood because I flew home with a snazzy little apron, emblazoned with the words "Professional Wine Taster . . . hiccup" and a slightly random selection of wine and food cookery books.  more...

Food

Why We Should Still Go to Owerk on an Egg

Do you remember the first time the legendary comedian Tony Hancock encouraged us to go to work on an egg in 1957? This brilliant slogan is attributed to novelist Fay Weldon, although she modestly claims she was just the manager of the team that created it. Well, regardless of who created it, "Go to work on an egg" remains a slogan that refuses to lie down - it's as relevant now as it was 50 years ago.  more...

Profiteroles with Grand Marnier recipe

I was lucky enough to be given a bottle of Grand Marnier for Christmas. It's the classic liquor created by blending cognac with tropical oranges which, as friends know, is my favourite tipple. It's one of my favourite flavouring agents, too, and I use regularly to add that certain something to fruit puddings and sauces. As I had some Grand Marnier left from the festitivies, free-range eggs in the larder and loads of clementines in the fruit bowl, I used these ingredients to create a delicious profiterole pudding.  more...

Which witch hazel's best?

VAL BOURNE was put off them for years, but eventually gave tham a go January is the month to buy witch hazels and I have just been on my annual hunt to find a good one. But I don't identify the best ones by the way they look, I smell them instead. The one photographed here is sweet and spicy (even on cool windy days) and the flowers veer between pink and orange, reminding me of shot silk. But you can also get cool primrose yellow, sunshine yellow and orange through to deep cherry red. I'll be planting my new acquisition among hellebores, snowdrops, ferns and miniature bulbs. Once established I shall expect it to produce flowers every January - when very few shrubs flower.  more...

Gray Matter

A glimpse of heaven — and hell

God or mammon? A bit of both came my way on Tuesday when I drove to Coventry's Belgrade Theatre for Ingmar Bergman's Scenes from a Marriage Arriving in plenty of time for the show, I took the opportunity to look over Sir Basil Spence's magnificent cathedral, which in 1999 was voted the 20th century's best new building in a survey conducted by English Heritage. I fancy there will be no similar awards a century hence for the latest addition to Coventry's skyline. This is the seven-storey Ikea building - the company's 17th giant store in the UK and its first in a city centre location. It opened in mid-December.  more...

Though I start I don't always finish

I propose to talk today about books I haven't read, chiefly in order that I can begin by confessing that one I haven't read is How to Talk About Books I Haven't Read. The acres of publicity lately devoted to Pierre Bayard's tome (published by Granta at £20) have not convinced me that it's my sort of thing at all. More literary criticism from a smart-alec Frenchman - thanks but no thanks. I would much prefer to get my hands on a copy of Cécilia by French journalist Anna Biton, a friend of the spurned Cécilia Sarkozy. At least I would be able to find out what the short-lived First Lady really called the President's circle of lady friends. "A bunch of slappers" - as the Daily Telegraph reported - hardly sounds to me like Académie française-approved French.  more...

'A joy'

Sir, It was a joy to read in last week's Wallingford Herald - "Sixty drivers caught speeding in two hours" - that the police had stopped 60 motorists for speeding in The Street, or the rat-run, in Crowmarsh Gifford. Sixty motorists in two hours must be a record, what a wonderful catch, perhaps next time, or will it be next year, they will check the speed of motorists who travel over Wallingford Bridge into Crowmarsh Gifford and deal with those motorists who flash their lights to warn others that there is a speed trap.  more...

On The Box

Grim reality and distorted history

City of Vice (Channel 4) is not about Oxford, although our local councils' vicious attacks on old people's homes, playgrounds, Radley lakes, rubbish collections, trees and motorists might lead you to think so. In fact it's about London in the mid-18th century. Ah! I hear you cry - another costume drama. Well, it does contain ladies in bonnets and men in wigs but this is rather different from your average prettily old-fashioned drama. London in Georgian times was "a monstrous place", bedevilled by crime, poverty and vice of all kinds.  more...

Recipes

Profiteroles with Grand Marnier

I WAS lucky enough to be given a bottle of Grand Marnier for Christmas. It's the classic liquor created by blending cognac with tropical oranges which, as friends know, is my favourite tipple. It's one of my favourite flavouring agents too, and something I use regularly to add that certain something to sponges, fruit puddings and sauces. As I had some over from the festivities and still had loads of clementines in the fruit bowl, I used Grand Marnier to create a delicious profiterole filling.  more...

Restaurants

The Old Chapel, Bicester

There is a pleasing austerity to the design of Bicester's newest restaurant that appropriately reflects its status as a former church. The Old Chapel occupies a building, tucked just off the Market Square, that has been an ornament to the architecture of the town since 1729. The Congregational (later United Reform) Church welcomed worshippers for one year short of a quarter of a millennium. The last bent the knee there at a closing service on June 25, 1978.  more...

Scenes from a Marriage: Belgrade Theatre, Coventry

The late (as he has been since last July) Ingmar Bergman was married five times and had nine children - one of them by Liv Ullmann who starred in - among much else for him - his 1973 television series Scenes from a Marriage. One can assume, then, that he knew whereof he wrote in this landmark production, which was refashioned into a much shorter film and, later still, into a stage play.  more...

And a good evening to you all

The popular broadcaster Rabbi Lionel Blue brings his entertaining stories to the Oxford Playhouse, writes NICK UTECHIN It will be fascinating to see what Rabbi Lionel Blue looks like on stage and in the evening. The photograph accompanying this piece shows someone I almost do not recognise as the slightly bulbous man I would see quietly slipping into his seat in the Today programme studio in Broadcasting House at 7.45 in the morning: I worked on the programme in the mid-1980s, soon after he began an almost unbroken run in the Thought For The Day slot.  more...
