Man seeks treason prosecutions

From the archive, first published Thursday 5th Jul 2007.

AN OXFORDSHIRE man wants the people responsible for taking Britain into the European Union during the Edward Heath government 35 years ago charged with treason and sedition.

And he is making a formal complaint against Thames Valley Police which is refusing to take up the case, claiming lack of resources. He is set to put his case to the Independent Police Complaints Commission.

Albert Burgess, 63, of Parliament Road, Thame, is backed by his friend David Barnby, of New Yatt Road, Witney.

Mr Burgess said: "I have researched this fully and found that the government of the day gave away sovereign powers to a foreign government and that is against all our traditions and our constitution.

"The way the British people were conned was shameful and amounts to treason and sedition.

"I won't rest until I see the still living politicians and civil servants standing in the dock at the Old Bailey.

"I don't know how many there are still alive, but they can be found."

He handed his evidence to police in Oxford in December and has now had a ruling from Supt Jim Trotman.

In a letter to Mr Burgess, Supt Trotman said: "I am not prepared to allocate resources which are already heavily committed to other investigations.

"I envisage great difficulties concerning the availability of witnesses, because most of the witnesses are now deceased.

"A considerable passage of time has elapsed since the offences in question and I do not consider it is now prudent to carry out an investigation."

Mr Burgess, who was a special constable with the Metropolitan Police for ten years and with Thames Valley Police for two years, said: "The 1971/72 government committed sedition and treason by undermining this country's constitution by lying and deceiving the public and Parliament by persuading them to go into the European Union.

"They persuaded the media to take a pro-EU stance and there was no room for contrary views."

Mr Barnby, a retired telecommunications engineer from Witney, said: "I was determined that I would investigate more thoroughly once the 30-year rule released the relevant documents.

"What I found has shocked me and I am right behind Mr Burgess on this one."
