From the Abingdon Herald, first published Thursday 9th Nov 2006.
Frances Briscoe began her defence of the senior women's title with a fine performance in the first round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League at Ascott-under-Wychwood on Sunday.
Although the White Horse Harrier had to give best to overall winner Wendy Jones, Briscoe came home in second place to get her defence off to the best possible start.
Cirencester's Jones led Briscoe from gun to tape, finishing well clear in 17mins 51secs, but Briscoe excelled in the excellent conditions, clocking 18.21 for second place.
In the junior races, Rhys Glastonbury was the star of the show as he was victorious in the combined under 15/17 boys' race, clocking 17.07.
He comfortably saw off the challenge of White Horse Harrier Robert Bowles and Abingdon Amblers' Steve Copley.
Radley's A team picked up a comprehensive first-round victory, with Phillipe Manning and George Miller making up their successful trio.
In the under 11 boys' race, Goring & Wallingford's George Axon came home first in 3.31.
A large team of 20 juniors from the newly-formed club took part in their first league race, and along with Axon, produced plenty of encouraging results.
Axon's teammates Jasper Lynch and Connor Redpath-Diggle finished seventh and 14th in the under 11 boys race, while in the under 11 event, Tallulah Pritchard came home sixth in 4.06.
Amy Brooker clocked 8.39 to finish eighth in the under 13 girls' race, with Ellie Burns finishing 14th in 8.50.
