Rugby: Chinnor aces thump rivals

South West 1: James Carthcart helped himself to a try, five conversions and four penalties as Chinnor thrashed Oxfordshire rivals Oxford Harlequins 52-6 at Kingsey Road on Saturday.

Trailing 18-3 at the break, Quins produced an inept second-half display containing little cohesion and drive.

They were also lacking key men in pivotal positions and paid a heavy price.

The early stages were even as Quins moved the ball wide to stretch the home defence, but fly half Cathcart kicked two penalties to open up a six-point lead for Chinnor.

Quins full back Andy Noyce reduced the arrears with a penalty, only for Chinnor to go further head when Cathcart followed up a kick to plunge over for a try which he converted.

Prop Joe Winpenny notched a second Chinnor try following a line-out to complete the first-half scoring.

The second half brought more pain for Quins, who desperately tried to shuffle their backline in a bid to get back into the game.

Henry Pooler went from fly half to scrum half, replacing the inexperienced Jamie Lakin, and Noyce switched from full back to stand-off, with winger Will Greenwood taking over the No 15 shirt.

However, it was in the pack where Chinnor held all the aces as No 8 Zane Winslade led the way.

Cathcart and Noyce exchanged penalties, before Chinnor stepped up a gear to add another Cathcart penalty and four tries between the 61st and 74th minutes.

Morgan Thompson, Darren Oxley, Andy Milburn and Matt Hutchins were the scorers, while Cathcart's unerring boot added the extra points.
