Chinnor's big step

From the archive, first published Wednesday 5th Mar 2003.

South West Division 1: Chinnor took a significant step towards avoiding relegation with a 20-8 victory at Bridgwater & Albion.

The defining moment came 15 minutes into the second half. With the scores at 8-8, Chinnor skipper Ger Phillips opted for a scrum when awarded a penalty close to the home line, and urged on by No 8 Paul Hennessy, the forwards gave scrum half Phillips the chance to pick up and score a vital try.

Chinnor had led at half-time with a Troy Hunter penalty and try from Dave Seymour, Bridgewater replying with a try.

Luckily for Chinnor, the windy conditions abated a little in the second half, although Bridgwater soon levelled the scores.

After Phillips's score, Hennessy picked up from the base of a scrum and drove forward before slipping an inside pass to Seymour to score his second try.

Hunter added the extra points to give Chinnor breathing space for the last 15 minutes.
