Fish shop damaged

From the archive, first published Monday 21st Jan 2002.

A fish and chip restaurant will be closed for three months after a fire, which started in deep fat fryers, caused £50,000 worth of damage.

Two people were taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, after the blaze in the Mediterranean Fish Bar, London Road, Headington, at 7pm, on Saturday. Both were treated for smoke inhalation and released.

Owner Ihsan Malta said: "I used six fire extinguishers trying to put it out, but I couldn't control it. It was very scary."

Firefighters from Rewley Road and Slade Park fire stations, in Oxford, took 90 minutes to put out the blaze.
